Friday Harbor
Friday Harbor Airport KFHR
This is a GREAT little airport. It has a fine asphalt runway, self service fuel, mechanic on field (Sid Smith), a good amount of transient parking, and very close proximity to a neat town. Wind is mostly down the runway, and there are no terrain obstacles.
Friday Harbor is one of American's premier $100 hamburger sites. In the summer, it's possible for all transient tie-downs, on the Northeast side of the field, to be full. The pattern can be busy. The biggest safety issue is those not flying right traffic, or doing straight-ins, while others are in the pattern.
Most of the time it works very well, and pilots are alert and helpful.
While it's common that, on San Juan Island, Friday Harbor Airport can have morning fog, while Roche Harbor airport is clear, this is an amusing extreme. After departing Roche Harbor and flying East, Friday Harbor Airport can be (not) seen directly under the white spot of fog in the center of the above photo. The fog appears to be confined to within the airport fence. Incidentally, the large green peninsula on the picture's lower left, is called Point Caution. You can see it, graphically, on the link under "Pilot Information" on the left, KFHR Pilots Guide 1.
Friday Harbor Airport History section ...
Friday Harbor Airport was built and run by Roy Franklin, for whom the terminal was just renamed. Below are some of Roy's old photos. We'll be adding more, and adding captions. If you have any information, please send it along, and we'll add it.
Friday Harbor looking South. This would be a long final to rwy 16, if it were there. Also, notice the lack of marina and the size of the town.
